She would always fight for a cause she believed in, from saving local radio stations to saving her children’s school, Bishop Eden’s, from closure, which involved taking on the Convenor of Highland Council's Education Committee ... and winning!
Ruth also loved to travel and took many trips with Len, including to Egypt, cruises on the Mediterranean or up the Great Glen on the converted barge, Ros Crana, where she sailed, cycled and canoed. Their once-in-a lifetime trip was to China where they made lots of happy memories, none more so that a private guided visit to see the Terra Cotta Warriors and even climbing the Great Wall herself.
She also loved to go off on her own, and would pack her bike panniers, which she obviously made herself, and head off on her own little adventures across the west coast islands and the Outer Hebrides. In later years she graduated to an electric bike and in the summer months cycled the six miles to and from her studio at Inchmore, something she continued to do up the September before she died.
Ruth loved Christmas, indeed many of you will remember the book she wrote 30 years ago called 'Make it a Merry Christmas'. She had been making Christmas decorations from a young age with her father and wanted to share the joy of that with all of us and others. We all grew up loving Christmas, and in her last few weeks, she has made us all promise that we will continue to celebrate Christmas in the usual way, which we all said we would do. Christmas will be even more special now and in the years to come.
Ruth loved every aspect of Christmas, decorating the house, giving gifts, preparing and eating the food, singing carols in church, sharing time with loved ones and seeing the joy in other people.
I think that about sums her up as a very special person... not just an intelligent and talented artist, but a woman of great kindness and faith.
Ruth always was, and always will be, an Angel to all who were privileged to know her.
May she Rest in Peace.
